The Vision

The client wanted something few people will ever own: a six-foot-deep living reef as the centrepiece of his home, framed by hand-built reef walls and two tall coral-clad stone columns he could cultivate and grow into over the years. Not a tank on a wall — a living feature, rising through the lobby of the house.

Made for the Space, and the Owner

A reef this deep, set into a footprint barely a metre across, is a difficult thing to build well — and the client wanted it exactly so. He ruled out artificial coral; he wanted genuine, porous reef rock he could graft living coral onto himself, season after season. Reefscape designed a braceless acrylic aquarium with the top left completely open and uninterrupted — nothing to break the view down into the water, and clean lines worthy of the room it sits in.

Crafted On Site, By Hand

With the residence near complete, every element was created in place rather than craned in. Reefscape hand-cast two highly porous reef walls — quietly concealing the aquarium’s pumps within them — and sculpted a pair of stone columns, four and five feet tall, as the living armature for the owner’s coral. Each is unique to this home and exists nowhere else.

Made to Endure — and to Be Cared For Quietly

A piece like this is meant to last a lifetime, and to be maintained without disruption. The reef structures were shaped to leave space for a person to step inside the aquarium itself, so its acrylic can be kept flawlessly clear for decades to come. Its life support runs discreetly from a private plant room six metres below — out of sight, out of mind, simply keeping the reef perfect.

The Result

A one-of-a-kind living reef, engineered into a private home with no compromise — the kind of confidential, bespoke commission Reefscape is entrusted with by clients who want something truly their own.
