A Pool You Can See Into

At the Le Méridien Riyadh, a five-star Marriott property in the capital’s Olaya business district, Reefscape designed and supplied a feature that turns an ordinary hotel pool into a piece of architecture: a wall of acrylic that lets guests on the terrace watch swimmers suspended in backlit water.

Two Pools, Eleven Windows

The installation spans two pools — a main adult pool and a separate children’s pool — joined by eleven acrylic viewing windows. The largest single panel runs almost 5.8 metres, and five of the eleven exceed five metres in length. The adult-pool windows stand a full metre tall behind 150cm of water; the children’s-pool windows are sized down to suit shallower depths.

Engineered, Not Assembled

Every panel is Plexiglas cast acrylic certified to ASME/ANSI PVHO-1 — the Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy standard, the same class of certification used for submarine viewports and public-aquarium tunnels. Thickness is engineered to the water column rather than fixed: 70mm on the deeper adult pool, 60mm on the children’s. The panels are held in 316 marine-grade stainless steel mullions and stiffeners, specified to resist chlorinated-water corrosion for the life of the pool, and the whole system is engineered to Australian Standards with acrylic deflection held to span/200.

Reefscape’s Role — and a Model That Travels

Reefscape designed the viewing-window system and supplied the engineered Plexiglas acrylic and 316 stainless components from Australia. Because the local installer had never fitted acrylic windows before, Reefscape travelled to Riyadh to inspect the site and verify the concrete structure was built to specification, met the client, then instructed the contractor’s team on exactly how to set and seal the panels — supplying the correct sealing and fixing products to do it properly. The build itself was carried out by the local crew, working to Reefscape’s drawings and under its guidance.

For a developer, this is the point: you get Australian-engineered, human-rated viewing windows — designed, supplied and quality-assured by Reefscape — installed by your own local contractor under Reefscape’s instruction, rather than the cost of mobilising a full specialist install team to site. The expertise travels; the heavy, expensive logistics don’t.
